Talent Search -Educational Advisor Intern

(Graduate Internship)

 

Summary: Educational Talent Search is a federally funded program designed to assist low income, first generation students enroll in postsecondary education.  The Educational Advisors provides direct services to students and parents at one of five target D.C. Public Middle or High Schools.  Services include recruiting and selecting participants; assessing needs; providing individual educational and career advising, facilitating workshops and classroom activities.  Interns will work with the Educational Advisor at each school to facilitate activities, provide individual assistance to students and assist with administrative tasks. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

·          Provides information to students, parents, school and community administrators about the availability of Talent Search services;

 

·          Assists advisors with assessing participants= need for services and reviewing educational plans.

 

·          Plans and conducts workshops and activities as in cooperation with TS advisor.

 

·          Assists with gathering appropriate materials to determine participant eligibility.  Documents services and maintains participant files according to policies and procedures of the program.

 

·          Assists with gathering information and materials for specific activities; gathers information about college and financial aid programs that meet participants needs.

 

·          Assists students with applications, essays, computerized searches and other tasks.

 

·          Provides follow up as needed. 

 

Qualifications: Graduate students in education, social work, psychology, or related fields.  Knowledge of college, career and financial aid information and resources, teaching/tutoring skills; experience facilitating activities for middle and/or high school students; organizational and communication skills; familiarity with computers and applications; experience working with low income students and parents.  Preference will be given to applicants who have overcome obstacles similar to those faced by the target population.

Stipend: $1,000 per semester.  Interns will work 10 hours per week.
